We were approached by Damian and Tatiana in 2024 who had just purchased a property in Petts Wood with huge potential to make into their forever home. The existing chalet style house suffered from poor insulation, not enough bedrooms, and a ground floor that did not flow particularly well and lacked connection with the generous garden space around the property.
To create additional space we created a new single storey extension that links between the existing extension and external garage structure which was to be replaced. The orientation of the existing chalet and garage position within the site provided an opportunity to create a unique floor plan that was more than just a large rectangular extension.
This additional space at ground floor allowed the entire ground floor to be reconfigured to accommodate a large open plan living, kitchen and dining space with two additional bedrooms, bathroom and utility room. A home office is also incorporated that allows both Damian and Tatiana to work from home.
To improve the approach to the house and entrance sequence into the dwelling a new entrance courtyard was created to the side of the property. The existing entrance hall was repositioned to align with the staircase and widened with integrated storage incorporated.
The form of the extension takes reference from the existing chalet style architecture but with an exaggerated pitched roof that creates a series of dynamic internal spaces. A large trapezoidal rooflight and fully glazed façade connects the house to the existing garden space while flooding the internal spaces with natural daylight.
All existing walls have been reinsulated with external windows and doors being replaced at ground floor to greatly improve the thermal performance of the existing building.
The interior design is influenced by mid-century architecture, with warm internal tones and exposed timber flooring and beams.
Externally the extension is constructed with external brick that matches the existing alongside a warm external render which complements the bronze coloured window frames.
The overhanging roof is faced with aluminium and the soffit lined with warm timber planks to create some synergy with the internal material palette.
Marjoram Architects undertook all aspects of the design from RIBA Stages 1 to 6, collaborating closely with our client throughout to select the internal finishes and fixtures, fittings throughout.
The project was completed in 2025, just in time for Damian and Tatiana's new family arrival.
